Charitable Giving
The lunches in the church held on the first Saturday of each month have provided a very good opportunity for fundraising in aid of different charities. There is a charity stall at each lunch stocked and run by Newnham residents the proceeds of which go to a different charity every month. The stalls are an added attraction for lunch-goers, selling cakes, books, plants, bric-a-brac or any combination, and have raised funds for the following charities:
Macmillan Cancer Care, Crisis (combating homelessness), Action for M.E., U.S.P.G., The Forge Centre in Cinderford, Wateraid, Forest Pulse, Links International, C.L.I.C. (for children with cancer), C.A.I.R.D. (for Romanian orphans), The Royal British Legion, Muscular Dystrophy and a homeless girls’ hostel in Bangalore.
This year we have also supported the Haiti Disaster Appeal, S.P.A.D. (a charity combating Aids) and a Diocesan youth project in Karnataka, South India, and each year Newnham residents give a considerable amount, via a house-to-house collection, to Christian Aid, which with Oxfam and Save the Children is one of the three main Disaster Emergency Fund charities.
